How to Layer Necklaces Like a Stylist: A Step-by-Step Guide

Layer your necklaces by starting with the chain you already reach for every day, then build everything else around that base.

Since layering necklaces means wearing multiple necklaces at once, the pieces, motifs, or silhouettes you keep reaching for and gravitating towards work best. The ideal necklace stack feels gathered, not planned, with each necklace living together in a way that says something about you.

The foundation of many great layered necklace looks is length: each necklace needs its own space to be seen and prevent tangling. Most stacks work in 2-inch increments: a choker at 14 inches, a pendant chain at 16 or 18, something longer at 20 to 24. Each piece gets its own lane. From there, it's about mixing weights, textures, and meaning. A shining fine chain next to a slightly bolder one. A charm to anchor the middle layer. A lariat that falls long and easy below it all.

• Two necklaces is a clean, considered start. A choker and a longer pendant chain worn together is one of those combinations that works every time, on anyone.
• Three necklaces is the sweet spot for an everyday layered necklace look. Three lengths, three textures. Most necklace stacks live here, and it's a very good place to be.
• Four or more is a committed neck mess (as we lovingly like to say!), the kind that takes years to build and gets more personal with every addition. There are no rules here. Only pieces that earn their place.

A 3-layer necklace stack offers symmetry and balance, and is one of the most loved ways to layer necklaces. Three pieces, each with its own aesthetic purpose.

1. Layer one: the choker or collar. Something close to the neck, at 14 to 16 inches. A fine shining chain or a collar that hugs the collarbone. This is the anchor, the piece everything else is in conversation with. Browse our choker necklaces to find your first layer.
2. Layer two: the pendant layer. A second chain at around 18 inches, ideally with something to hang from it: a charm, an initial, a locket, a birthstone, or a charm jumble or charm holder necklace. This is the personal layer - make it your own!
3. Layer three: the longer layer. Let something fall to 20 to 24 inches. A lariat, a longer chain, you can also add another pendant or charm here to encourage weight & drape if your chain is lighter so that this layer plays well below the other two.

Keeping layered necklaces from tangling starts with choosing the right chains. Most tangling happens when necklaces are too similar in weight or length, or when fine-link chains spend the day rubbing directly against each other. A few things that help:

• Vary your lengths by at least 2 inches. Chains properly spaced tend to stay in their own lanes best. This is the single most effective thing you can do.

• Mix your chain styles. A flat herringbone won't tangle as much with a round-link chain. A braided chain has enough structure to stay distinct from a finer one beside it. Different textures mean less chances of tangling.
• Add a pendant or charm. The weight helps the chain drape cleanly and pulls it away from the lighter chains above it.
• Embrace a little imperfection. Even in some of our favorite necklace stacks, chains tangle and untangle with movement throughout the day. Some minor twists give the necklace stack a lived-in feel, like you’ve always been wearing it. We love a little imperfection & character in a necklace stack. So, long story short - don’t stress the tangling. As long as the stack is comfortable and you’re happy with it, wear it!

Layering chunky and dainty necklaces together is one of the most interesting things you can do with a necklace stack. The contrast between a shining, whisper-fine chain and a bolder, more substantial one creates depth and dimension that a matched set simply can't. The two together feel collected. Found over time. Entirely yours.

A few principles that make the combination work:

• Put the bolder chain closer to the neck. A herringbone or braided collar worn close gives the whole stack a strong foundation. Everything layered below it reads as intentional contrast.

• Let the finer chains fall longer. Shining fine chains with pendants or charms drape beautifully below a bolder piece and benefit from the visual weight sitting above them.

• Limit to one statement-weight chain, or vary the silhouettes between them. One bolder piece anchors the stack, but 2 different silhouettes are also powerful in a stack, in a way that gives an unstudied kind of cool.

Here are a few tips to necklace layering that assure you’ll never want to take off your stack:

• Start with length. Every great necklace stack begins with varying lengths, separation, and negative space. Aim for approximately two inches between each layer. This is the rule that matters most and the one to come back to when your stack isn't laying quite right.

• Vary your textures. Round link, flat herringbone, braided, fine box chain. Different textures catch light differently, stay separate naturally, and make a stack feel collected rather than matched.

• Anchor with something meaningful. A charm, a locket, an initial, a stone that marks something. A focal point gives the whole stack somewhere to land, and something worth looking at.

• Build slowly. The most beautiful layered necklace stacks aren't assembled in one afternoon. They grow over years: a chain saved up for, a charm from a place you've been, a pendant from someone who knows you. Let the stack accumulate meaning. That's what makes it yours.
