Collette Ishiyama is a jewelry designer based in NYC’s East Village. After studying painting at Pratt, she began assisting jewelry designers and discovered her affinity for metal work. Her eponymous line is handmade in NYC from brass and stingray leather.
On stingray leather:
Stingrays are an abundant, free living populations. These are not captive bred farms, a practice commonly used in producing other exotic leathers. these stingrays are only caught for food, a significant source of protein for the local people. The skins, unbelievably tough and difficult to work with, are merely a by-product and would normally be wasted.
